ENDING FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION A STRATEGY FOR THE EUROPEAN UNION INSTITUTIONS
Abstract
This campaign contributes to an international mobilisation that recognises the need to join forces to end the practice of FGM. This international mobilisation is illustrated by the adoption of the United Nations interagency statement (in 2008); the UNHCR guidance on FGM (in 2009), several calls by UN Special Procedures and by treaty monitoring bodies. The creation of the Donors Working Group on Female Genital Mutilation/
Cutting (FGM/C), to which the European Commission is a partner, contributes to it. This mobilisation is also taking place at a national level within the EU with the development of National Action Plans on FGM in several Member States.
