Abstract
This document presents a policy brief on Technology as a tool to make cities safe and combat violence against women.
Violence against women is perpetrated in private and public spaces. Prevalent forms in cities at the global and regional levels are sexual violence and harassment of women in public spaces, which restrict
women’s ability to participate equally in urban life and infringe on women’s right to the city,1 meaning their right to live free from violence and the fear of violence and free from rights violations that arise in spaces where they live and work. Combating such violence is imperative. General Assembly resolution 73/148, the first of its kind, calls for the intensification of efforts to prevent and eliminate all forms of violence against women and girls, including sexual harassment. Through this resolution, the United Nations has recognized sexual harassment as an impediment to achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls and to the full realization of their human rights
