Putting Women First: Ethical and Safety Recommendations for Research on Domestic Violence Against Women

Abstract
The guidelines is developed for WHO from those prepared for the World Health Organization Multi-Country Study on Women’s Health and Domestic Violence. Il contains recommendations that are based on the collective experiences of the International Research Network on Violence Against Women and reflect current knowledge concerning the ethical and safety considerations that need to be addressed when conducting research on domestic violence. The special nature of this research topic demands that safety concerns be considered from the very beginning of a study through its implementation and dissemination. This means that violence research will likely require a longer timeframe and a greater investment of resources to ensure these issues are fully addressed. Donors and researchers alike can make their own contribution to women’s safety by following these guidelines and never putting research objectives above women’s wellbeing.
