Resettlement Handbook UNHCR_2011

The UNHCR Resettlement Handbook offers resettlement management and policy guidance to UNHCR staff, and is a key reference tool on global resettlement policy and practice for resettlement countries, NGOs and other partners. This revision of the Resettlement Handbook incorporates updates to UNHCR policy and practice since the release of the 2004 edition of the Handbook. The previous annexes are replaced by website hyperlinks to reference documents, some of which are internal documents accessible only to UNHCR staff. Resettlement States have described their policies and programmes in individual Country Chapters which are an integral part of this Handbook. As these Country Chapters are subject to frequent changes, they are not included in the printed Handbook, but are available online at http://www.unhcr.org/ resettlementhandbook.

Human Development Indices and Indicators

Human Development Indices and Indicators: 2018 Statistical Update is the product of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO) at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Human development is about human freedoms. It is about building human capabilities—not just for a few, not even for most, but for everyone. In 1990 UNDP published the first Human Development Report (HDR). Since then, it has produced more than 800 global, regional, national and subnational HDRs and organized hundreds of workshops, conferences and other outreach initiatives to foster human development. These activities have extended the frontiers of analytical thinking about human progress beyond economic growth, firmly placing people and human well-being at the centre of development policies and strategies.

Clandestine migration and the business of bordering Europe

This document presents a thesis presented for examination for the PhD degree of the London School of Economics and Political Science. It explores ethnographically how clandestine migration has been constituted as a field of intervention and knowledge-gathering since this time. In this field, it is argued, the roles of policing, caring for and informing on migrants intermingle while producing shared models, materialities and classifications that impinge upon the travellers labelled “illegal”. Drawing on the dynamic nominalism of Ian Hacking, the actor-network theory of Bruno Latour and a growing body of critical migration and border studies, the thesis explores the interfaces where specific modalities of migrant illegality are produced. The exploration of these interfaces – in deportation, surveillance, patrolling, rescues, reception and activism – relies on an extended field site, with research carried out in Senegal, Mali, Morocco, southern Spain and European policing headquarters. Throughout, the thesis highlights not just the workings of the migration industry but this industry’s excesses and absurdities, which make the business of bordering Europe a fraught and contradictory enterprise.
